The Combermere Alumni Excellence Awards launched in December 2021 by the Academic Development Group of the CSOSA have proved to be very beneficial for students doing CXC exams in 2022.

Last year, the winners of awards were selected by a group of teachers using criteria for the school’s Honour Roll. Performance in exams was of paramount importance.

The aim of the scholarships was to help parents pay for private tuition to supplement that which was received in the classrooms. This move turned out to be a blessing for many parents who had to cope with the challenges brought on by COVID-19. The appreciation shown by parents has been effusive

It is clear that scholarships awarded to students while they are still at school can give them the impetus to aim for excellence. Having alumni finance the programme tells them that someone “has their back.” The support from alumni from the USA, UK, Cayman Islands and Barbados has so far been heart-warming. You have captured the vision and have responded admirably.

We are aiming to help the students pass their exams subjects and also do so at Grade 1 level. Fourteen (14)  students received scholarships in 2021. As I am writing this article, I have received thank you notes from four (4) parents and they are extremely pleased that their sons/daughters have attained Grade 1 passes in the subjects for which lessons were done in the Alumni Scholarship Programme.

In Academic Year 2022-2023, CSOSA will again be offering 13 Awards to students of the senior school, based on their outstanding performance in 4th, 5th (CSEC) and Lower 6th exams (CAPE Unit 1).  One of these scholarships is the Marva Lahai Award funded annually by former Girl Guides. Each scholarship is valued at $1200.00 BDS.

There are almost 200 students in the Sixth Form. It would be great if we could assist more students. Also, we need to continue building the scholarship fund to ensure continuity.

All Old Scholars are welcome to make donations to the Scholarship Fund via the Combermere School Old Scholars website. If it is your desire to initiate an award named after your name or that of someone who is associated with Combermere (as in the case of Marva Lahai), we would welcome discussing that concept with you.

An investment in the education of Combermere Students is one of the best ways in which you can assist your alma mater in being the school of choice in Barbados
